I’ve had a good number of hits on the Miata which I did end up decided to sell. With that it’s time to look for a replacement, that’s a bit better on my messed up back and hip. I still want rear wheel drive. Preferably a coupe. Hard top or convertible doesn’t matter too much. I still want performance but also a better ride than a Miata. Also to help with my hip on longer drives, I’d prefer an automatic. What would Oppo suggest? Let’s use $12,000 as a maximum price.

Also, if any Oppos in Kansas are interested in the Miata let me know.

The G35/7 coupe seems like a good choice. You might be able to get a decent GTO for 12k, but you can’t get a sunroof or folding back seat on the Catera Coupe.

Even though the C230 coupe is cool with that huge panoramic sunroof, reliability isn’t the best.

Also, if you get a car that needs shocks, get the Koni FSD if they’re available for whatever car you end up getting. Nice ride, awesome handling. They’re OE on the Gallardo.

Maybe a 1 series? I really did enjoy mine, you can find them for around your price.

That is either just incredibly bad luck or neglect. I ran mine pretty hard for 6 years and 55k miles. Never had any issues.

C5 corvette can be had in that price range. And you’ll be amazed at how cheap the insurance is.

yeah Nissan is a step below Honda and Toyota in terms of quality, but still better than most German cars. I have a 4th gen Maxima with the VQ30, and a bunch of stupid sensors needed to be replaced, that would NEVER die on a Toyota.

You might also want to consider the Lexus SC430 and LS430

A very good AW11! Waaaay more practical and spacious than a Miata, has pop-up headlamps, a more characterful engine, and will try to kill you. Classified as an antique in alot of states depending on the year and generally emissions exempt.

Yeah, call and get a quote. Most vettes are (not)driven by old people that very rarely make any claims. I when I was 26, I went from a 350z to a c6 z06 and my insurance was cut almost in half.

I was going to say Challenger Hellcat as a 8/4ths Miata but saw the $12k limit. RX8 I guess? I don’t care for them, but at least you have an excuse to add oil unlike my cars (I keep telling people I took a qt out to be analyzed and it’s in NO WAY related to the spots on my driveway)

Hmm...I recently sold my Miata and replaced it with a blown up STi. Wouldn’t recommend that option...

A lot of people upgrade to an S2000 after the Miata phase.

If you bought into the “Miata fixes everything” mentality, the next rung is “Porsche fixes everything.” If you aren’t afraid of mileage you’re sniffing Carerra territory at $12k but probably jusssst outside looking in.

Loved the coupe I drove, hated the ‘vert.

Got to drive both through my bosses who had them as company cars.. The ‘vert was a flappy-paddle auto, which I got to drive on an autocross track. The coupe was a 6-speed that I drove to the store and back. Both were decked out with all the extras. The coupe felt a lot more solid and a lot lighter as soon as I turned in at low speed— I’m just assuming it would translate to higher speeds. The vert felt heavy, sluggish, sloppy, vague— nowhere near as nice as my old E30. I should mention, both were 135i models.

I’d like to try out one of the new 2-series— I’ve heard they’re great.

Never driven a 1 series vert, my friend was test driving verts and he drove one and what he said was similar to your experience.

I had a 228i as a loaner. I was very underwhelmed. Everything other than the steering was just fine, no problems. The electric power steering was vague and numb. The problem might have been I stepped out of my M3 and into it, but then I’ve gotten out of the M3 and into the 1 I used to have and never had the same feeling. I think electric power steering will eventually get there, but until it does, I prefer hydraulic power steering.

Yeah, and to make it worse, I really didn’t like the progressive steering— just give me a fixed ratio!

Interestingly, my E90 has the “servotronic” steering, which means it adjusts the steering at different speeds, more input is required at high speeds. It actually works pretty great and the steering was noticeably lighter than the steering in my 128i at parking lot speeds. They both required the same amount of movement at high speeds, but at low speeds the M3 was much more maneuverable, and it’s not like the 1 is a heavier car.

I’m sure it’s something you get used to... when you’re not, it’s very odd to only have to turn the steering wheel a half turn when you’d be used to going full lock on most cars, and to not know exactly how far to turn the wheel on turn in, since it’s based partly on the entry speed... seemed unnecessary to me, but I’ve never minded manual-rack cars and standard hydraulic racks.

It's not that noticeable at low speeds, pretty much like everyother car. It's more at high speeds when it requires more movement. I think I put it wrong earlier, its a lot less heavy at parking lot speeds. The extra input ads to the feeling of stability at speed.
